EKO is proud to announce 2019 Empowered Kids Ontario Scholarship Recipients

Empowered Kids Ontario-Enfants Avenir Ontario (EKO) is pleased to announce six recipients of the 2019 Empowered Kids Ontario Scholarship Award. The successful candidates were selected for their leadership skills, academic excellence and significant contributions to their communities. Each EKO Scholarship recipient will receive $1,000 toward their higher education and career goals. The 2019 EKO Scholarship recipients are:

“In addition to outstanding scholastic achievement and community service, these students have demonstrated leadership skills that will serve them well as they pursue their academic and personal goals,” says Penny Smiley, Empowered Kids Ontario Chair.

Applicants for the EKO Scholarship are young people from every corner of Ontario who excel academically, contribute to their schools and to their communities as advocates, leaders, mentors, and athletes. Each applicant is a current or former client of an Empowered Kids Ontario member organization who works hard on their personal development and rehabilitation.

“We are once again excited to introduce these remarkable young people,” says Jennifer Churchill, CEO of Empowered Kids Ontario. “Congratulations to this year’s scholarship recipients—for their standout skills and hard work that has set them up for success going forward.”

EKO has typically awarded five recipients each year. This year Empowered Kids Ontario is recognizing six outstanding youth. The sixth award, funded by our members and staff, is a tribute to leaders among our association members who are passing the baton to the next generation of trailblazers in child development. Each of these tremendous professionals has devoted their long career to kids with special needs and their families living their best lives. This sixth award recognizes their many professional contributions:

  • Louise Paul, Children’s Treatment Network of Simcoe-York
  • Jenny Greensmith, Pathways Children’s Health Centre, Sarnia
  • Dr. John LaPorta, Thames Valley Children’s Centre, London
  • Elaine Whitmore, John McGivney Children’s Centre, Windsor

Applications for the 2020 EKO Scholarship will open on February 10, 2020.
