The Globe and Mail highlights BCI technology and its potential for kids
February 26, 2025
Cliffy, a super happy kid with quite the imagination, shows off his skills using brain-computer interface (BCI) technology at the John McGivney Children's Centre School Authority. With this technology, Cliffy can watch video books, play with his Hot Wheels and even make himself some popcorn, all by thinking about smiling.
Thanks to the groundbreaking $30-million gift from The Slaight Family Foundation dedicated enabling transformative work towards a more inclusive and accessible future, more kids like Cliffy will have access to BCI technology. Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital and Empowered Kids Ontario were among 11 organizations to benefit from this gift, and together are bringing the innovation to Children's Treatment Centres across Ontario.
The Globe and Mail shares Cliffy's story and highlights the real impacts of this technology: strengthening kids' literacy, communication and numeracy; providing access to necessary play and joy; and breaking down physical barriers.
