Based in Canada’s capital, CHEO is a globally renowned health institution with a mission to provide exceptional care and support to children, youth and their families. We are redefining what it means to be a hospital—because Kids These Days deserve the most innovative care available. Exceptional and integrated care is what families, children and youth deserve. We are committed to partnering with them and the community to provide this care—where, when and how it’s needed.
Mission Statement
The best life for every child and youth.
Our Story
Dedicated to the best life for every child and youth, CHEO is a global leader in pediatric health care and research. Opening our doors in 1974, we offer a full range of specialized pediatric care and services to children from eastern and northern Ontario, western Quebec and Nunavut. Our site is home to a hospital, a children’s treatment centre, a school, a research institute, and is affiliated with the University of Ottawa as an academic health science centre.
Our People/Our Team
We are home to more than 6,500 staff, clinicians, scientists and researchers, as well as volunteers – all of whom work together to help children and youth achieve their best lives. Team CHEO includes 3,200 doctors, nurses, other specialized health professionals and staff, 250 researchers, 700 volunteers, and 2,300 trainees in medicine, nursing and other health professions.
Achievement/Awards And Recognition
In 2024, CHEO achieved the highest level possible in its accreditation process, earning exemplary status from Accreditation Canada, the independent agency that rates the quality and safety of Canadian health-care organizations. CHEO met 2,745 of the 2,760 standards against which it was assessed—a result of 99.5 per cent. CHEO also achieved all 30 required organizational practices in areas like safety, medication management, infection control and communication.
In March 2023, CHEO achieved designate status as a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO). CHEO's journey to achieve BPSO designation signifies a long-term commitment to deliver the highest standards of care to our patients and families. It has offered nurses, and other health care providers, additional tools, support, and resources to aid children and youth to live their best life.
