EKO Scholarships are now next level
March 13, 2024
Empowered Kids Ontario is taking the EKO Scholarship Program to new levels.
“We’re increasing the number of scholarships and the amount of each award,” says EKO CEO Jennifer Churchill. “This fall we’ll name eight EKO Scholars, including EKO’s award that is exclusive to an Indigenous, First Nations and Métis student. Each EKO Scholar will receive $3,000 toward their tuition at an accredited college, university, Indigenous Institute, or career training program.”
The EKO Scholarship not only helps students cover their tuition costs, the program also recognizes promise. Being a recipient speaks volumes for every EKO Scholar.
“EKO is dedicated to helping kids with disabilities and developmental differences achieve their higher education and career goals,” says Tina Langlois, EKO’s Chair.
People with disabilities have consistently been employed at lower rates than those without disabilities. According to Statistics Canada, in 2022—at a time of strong employment and a tight labour market—the employment rate of people with disabilities was 15 percentage points lower than for those without disabilities. “These are numbers that can’t be ignored,” says Langlois. “We believe the workforce should both reflect the world and strengthen a culture of inclusion.”
