Sophie Sutherland: Everything is Achievable

There is much to know about Sophie Sutherland.

She is an incredible athlete. She plays soccer. She also practices Karate which she says has been a major part of her life for 12 years, beginning when she was six years old. Sophie held a spot on the National Team for two years. This summer she earned her black belt. Sophie says Karate has always been reliable and holds a special place in her heart. She plans to continue practicing throughout her life.

Sophie has overcome obstacles to reach her goals, succeed academically, and fully participate in her community. Some of that work began early for her, some she encountered later. Throughout her years, Sophie always perseveres—in sports, in school to achieve high marks, and in every aspect of life. She is well-known for her “can do” attitude and her kind, gentle demeanor that naturally attracts friends and community members.

She’s an active and engaged participant in her Anishinaabe culture. Sophie describes jingle dancing as a place that gives her strength and peace. She dances the healing dance so others may achieve their dreams too.

Sophie is an advocate for reconciliation, diversity, and inclusion. As the inclusion and equity representative for Hammarskjold High School’s student advisory committee, Sophie was committed to ensuring barriers were identified and addressed for every student. Her work was instrumental in planning the National Day of Reconciliation—Orange Shirt Day, and other events. She also served as a student representative on the Lakehead District School Board Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee.

Sophie’s long-term goal is to work in secondary education, teaching kids and helping them overcome their challenges. But first, Sophie will be attending McMaster University, double majoring in Honours English and Cultural Studies. Once she receives her first Bachelor’s degree, she intends to continue on to obtain her Bachelor’s degree in Education.

There is no doubt Sophie will serve future students, and her community, extraordinarily well.
