Letters of Recommendation

Candidates must submit two letters of recommendation from school or community mentors. This may be a mentor, teacher, coach, school administrator, or community leader. Students may wish to reach recommenders via email or in person. For assistance reaching school mentors who you may not be in touch with regularly, please email your school principal, whose email address can be found on the school’s website.

The letters of recommendation should:

  • Detail how long and in what capacity the supporter knowns the applicant
  • Discuss the applicant’s commitment to service
  • Describe the applicant’s exceptional leadership in their community or in school
  • Explain why the applicant is a strong candidate for the EKO Scholarship

Note: Be sure to ask mentors and contacts for the letter of recommendation in advance; those you ask will appreciate being given a week or two to provide a thoughtful recommendation.

The Selection Committee considers each applicant’s

  • Educational goals and direction
  • Approach to overcoming barriers
  • Involvement with their community
  • Extra-curricular activities
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
